Working with Pain: Approach & Rest

Hi Everyone! Frank Baird, LMFT, LPCC, CMT-P, and Vivian Hermiz, JD, CMT-P, facilitate weekly Resilience classes online.  In this class:

1. Theme and Focus:

  • The month’s theme is “ouch body pain,” which addresses both chronic and acute pain experienced by many people.

  • Today’s focus is on a technique called “approach and rest.”

  2.    Understanding Pain and Suffering:

  • Pain is a natural, unavoidable physical sensation with varying intensity.

  • Suffering arises from the emotional and mental resistance to pain, amplifying the distress.

  3.    Mindfulness and Pain:

  • Practicing mindfulness helps differentiate between the actual physical pain and the mental overlay that intensifies suffering.

  • Mindfulness encourages a curious and inquisitive approach to exploring pain.

  4.    Challenges of Pain:

  • High levels of pain often lead to a desire to retreat rather than confront and analyze the sensations.

  • Recognizing that pain is not static and can vary in intensity can provide opportunities to practice mindfulness.

  5.    Practicing with Pain:

  • The session includes techniques to discern when to approach and when to turn away from pain.

  • Participants will be guided on how to shift attention and build skills to be with pain mindfully.

Our Resilience Classes are designed to be inclusive and accessible to all. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced practitioner, these classes offer a space for growth and learning. No prior knowledge or skill is needed to benefit or practice. The straightforward instructions are great for beginners considering starting and excellent for advanced practitioners who want to grow.
